How to Calculate Landed Cost for Hemp Imports: FOB, CIF & DDP Breakdown

The sticker price is never the real price. Here's how to calculate your true landed cost — with real examples.

What Is Landed Cost?

Landed cost is the total cost of getting a product from the supplier's factory to your warehouse. It includes the product price, freight, insurance, customs duties, taxes, port handling, and last-mile delivery.

Many first-time importers make the mistake of comparing FOB prices without accounting for the additional costs. A supplier quoting $900/MT FOB might actually cost you $1,400/MT landed — while a DDP quote of $1,350/MT could be the better deal.

The Landed Cost Formula

Landed Cost = Product Cost + Freight + Insurance + Customs Duties + Taxes + Port Charges + Last-Mile Delivery + Sourcing Fee

Each component varies by product, destination, shipping method, and Incoterm.

Example 1: FOB — Hemp Fibre to Rotterdam

Let's say you're importing 10 MT of retted hemp fibre from India to Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Product cost (FOB Mumbai)$12,000
HemPortal sourcing fee (5%)$600
Ocean freight (20ft container)$1,800
Marine insurance (0.5%)$60
Customs duty (EU, ~3%)$360
Port handling & clearance$350
Customs broker fee$200
Last-mile delivery$300
Total Landed Cost$15,670
Per MT landed$1,567/MT

Example 2: DDP — Same Order

Now let's see the same order with DDP (HemPortal handles everything):

Product cost$12,000
HemPortal DDP fee (7%)$840
All-inclusive logistics$2,600
(freight + insurance + duties + handling + delivery)
Total Landed Cost$15,440
Per MT landed$1,544/MT

Key Insight: In this example, DDP is actually slightly cheaper because HemPortal negotiates bulk freight rates. Plus, you save time and eliminate the risk of unexpected costs. For first-time importers, DDP is almost always the smarter choice.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • Demurrage & detention: Charges if your container sits at port too long (common for first-time importers unfamiliar with clearance timelines)
  • Fumigation at destination: Some countries require additional fumigation on arrival
  • Currency fluctuation: INR/USD rates can shift between quote and payment
  • Sample costs: Pre-order samples typically cost $50-200 + courier
  • Lab testing: Third-party testing at destination ($100-500 per test)
  • Storage: If you can't receive immediately, warehouse costs add up

Tips to Reduce Landed Cost

  1. Consolidate orders: Full container loads (FCL) are significantly cheaper per MT than LCL
  2. Time your shipments: Avoid peak shipping seasons (Q4) when freight rates spike
  3. Negotiate payment terms: 50/50 (advance/before dispatch) is standard; longer terms may be possible with established relationships
  4. Use GSP preferences: India qualifies for preferential tariff rates in many markets
  5. Start with DDP: Learn the true costs, then switch to FOB once you have your own logistics network
